It all started with doodling and a painting obsession
Casual Chronicles is a very colourful art venture. It captures people on the street who make you look twice and dreamy places to explore.
It all began in my parents living room in 2014 while I was eating haloumi cheese and experimenting with a new paint project that I could travel the world with and paint all the people I saw along the way. You see I’ve always been obsessed with people watching and painting.
These doodles of characters in my travel art diary turned into what is now Casual Chronicles. Many years on, I’m still documenting the many different people who make our cities unforgettable – each in their own weird and wonderful way.
Casual Chronicles turned a new page in the pandemic. The world felt topsy turvey, travel wasn’t an option and people fled the streets to be safe and snug at home. There were no people to watch! So, I experimented once more with but this time with dreamy places – to transport people, and myself, to some holidays from home.
A little bit about the artist
My name is Emma George and I’m the artist behind Casual Chronicles. I’m from Brisbane, Australia and nearly six years ago I made the move to London to pursue my business career and ended up with an even bigger painting obsession.
I took my inspiration from life on the streets of London; it sprinkled the daily grind with unexpected excitement. That inspiration grew exponentially with travel adventures that opened my eyes to new people and places.
I learnt to paint in high school and taught myself new techniques from there. I suppose you could describe my style as colourful, detailed, playful and a bit quirky.
I paint when I have spare moments outside my full-time job in consulting where I specialise in change experience and behavioural change. I like to think that I’ve somehow combined my love of art and business in an unexpected, colourful sort of way.
